glass recycling

Hi why do we send our empty glass to recycling dumps when they could go back to the shops and then to the manufaturers?

Why do  some of us in this country (England) send our  empty glass bottles to recycle centres when they could be sent back to the manufacturers via shops.? The person sending back the bottles to the shop aslo gets a refund. Other countries do this and we used to.
